Frequently Asked Questions
Life is a mixed bag of events, which bring about different kinds of emotions in different individuals. Sometimes, some of these emotions seem more daunting than others – these could be emotions associated with loss, addiction, at the workplace, or a particular life event, etc. Counseling is a tool, or an approach rather, by which an individual can address and choose to resolve some of these difficult emotions. It is a form of talk therapy, where an individual expresses these difficult emotions, in a safe and confidential environment, in the presence of a counselor.
A counselee is one who receives Counseling. It can be absolutely anyone. It could be someone who is looking to address difficult feelings, someone who is not able to solve a particular problem on their own, or who feels that they are out of options. It could be an individual looking to develop more self-awareness, or it could be someone who finds it difficult to talk about certain personal issues to their family or friends, or they might be simply looking for an objective viewpoint.
Counseling can be really beneficial to individuals experiencing difficult emotions relating to, and not limited to these areas:
- Grief and Loss
- Substance Abuse & Addiction
- Illness
- Trauma
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Family
- Relationships
- Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation
- Stress Management
- Parenting
- Child and Adolescent Issues
- Career Counseling
- Marriage
A counselor is a certified therapist who is trained in different forms of Counseling and is equipped with different tools to help a counselee with what they wish to achieve out of Counseling. They listen to the counselees carefully and help them work through their issues, with tools and techniques that would best suit their needs or situation.
The counselor first talks with the counselee to understand, what exactly is it that they are looking to therapy for – scope out their needs and expectations. This can be anything, ranging from therapy being a safe space for expression alone, to whether they wish to work to resolve certain difficult emotions with specific events or situations, to whether they wish to pursue self-development in general.
After understanding what a counselee is seeking, a counselor acquaints them with the approaches they work with or tools they use. Taking into consideration, the counselee’s comfort zones and such, a customized Counseling plan is devised. The frequency of sessions, or the approach or tools even, are revised periodically if needed, as per the inputs of the counselee through the course of the Counseling sessions.
Using this approach to counseling see a counselee’s mind-body-soul as a one-singular unit, and use this idea to improve their quality of life.
There is the concept of dissociation – which is defined is usually defined as disconnection from one’s physical body, surroundings, memories, and emotions. Counselees who have gone through some kind of trauma in their lives, are most likely to show symptoms of dissociation.
The counselor using BMP works to re-establish the connection between mind and body, to release trauma, and guide them towards healing.
The first session is also known as preliminary consultation. This session is used to understand what is the client seeking counseling for, what things they wish to work on, their expectations, and what kind of time are they looking to give themselves for this process. This preliminary session is majorly for setting up the scope of the client’s counseling journey.

The various types of counseling are as mentioned below:
- Individual Counseling: This is the most common and widely known form of counseling. Healing is encouraged and undertaken, in one to one setting.
- Group Counseling: This is perhaps the most recent kind of counseling, where more and more people are recognizing that the difficulties they are facing are not unique. Group counseling encourages healing, by addressing shared experiences and emotions, their acknowledgment, as well as letting the counselees learn from each other too.
- Pre-Marital Counseling: Potential couples, who are looking to get married are counseled, to understand more about the journey they will be venturing on together, and the life ahead.
- Couples Counseling: The counselors help address any and all issues the counselees might have come to them with, be it communication, issues with wider friends and family circle, sexuality, intimacy, etc in a relationship. The couples’ commitment to each other is leveraged by the counselor, to not just address the issues they have as a couple but encourage individual happiness & satisfaction in the relationship.
- Family Counseling: A counselor allows the family a space, where all the individual voices are heard. They also equip them with tools and techniques, to encourage holistic healing.
The type of counseling you receive will be determined by you and your counselor. Sometimes a combination of individual and group counseling or other types might be the most effective treatment option.
